Resume / CV

A resume or CV is a summary of your educational and work history, along with a collection of projects, research, and academic papers, as well as a mention of your skills and interests. It gives the reader a general understanding of your capabilities, education, and a glimpse into your personality.

The terms CV and resume are sometimes used interchangeably, but there are some differences between them. The difference lies in the level of detail provided. Typically, a CV includes more detailed descriptions of research and scientific work, which is recommended for graduate and doctoral levels. However, a resume generally presents educational, work, and scientific history with less detail.

A CV must contain accurate, correct, and verifiable information.

A CV should not be overly long. Usually, two pages is sufficient, although there is no specific limit.

It’s better for the CV to be neatly arranged and prioritized, without any spelling errors.

In general, include the following sections in your CV:

Personal information and contact details

Educational background from newest to oldest

Work experience from newest to oldest

Articles, research work, participation in seminars and conferences related to your field of study (if applicable)

Honors and awards (if applicable)

Personal interests

Membership in associations or volunteer work (if applicable)

Language, computer, and other specific skills

Information about three university professors or employers who know you and can recommend you to your target university.

Statement of Purpose

The Statement of Purpose outlines your educational plans and expresses your goals and motivations for studying in the field and at the university you intend to apply to. The statement allows the university or professor to assess your motivation, objectives, and interest in the relevant field.

The Statement of Purpose should not be a repetition of your resume. Instead, it should elaborate on the more prominent aspects of your academic background, work history, and research skills, demonstrating why you are a suitable candidate for that field and university. Most importantly, you should explain what your goals are for studying in the specific field and how studying that subject can help you achieve your objectives.

A motivation letter doesn’t have a specific format; it’s written as a cohesive text of about one to two pages, which, in addition to its content, demonstrates your writing skills.

Recommendation Letter

A recommendation letter is a confirmatory letter issued by the university professors from whom you studied, verifying your academic and ethical integrity. This letter usually includes a brief introduction of the student, a mention of their academic and practical activities, and an endorsement of their personality and ethics.

Additionally, at the end of the recommendation letter, the professor provides their contact information for potential follow-up from the target university. Sometimes, as a condition for admission, the target university also accepts a recommendation letter from an employer. Each professor or employer typically writes a recommendation letter in their own style, but the overall content is usually the same.

Research Proposal

A research proposal is an introduction to the research work you intend to conduct on a specific topic in your next level of study. It’s basically a generalized and concise plan outlining the research goals, reasons for the importance of the research topic, a background of similar research conducted on this specific and similar topics, and a collection of references to be used for extensive future studies. It’s often required to be submitted at the master’s level, especially for a PhD.

Its writing style resembles a short thesis, with a page count ranging from 10 to 20 pages. It must contain essential and necessary information, without fluff or extras. The format is similar to the sections of a master’s thesis and includes a table of contents and all chapters, but in a brief and summarized manner.

Translation of academic documents for Canada

A few points about translating educational documents for admission to Canadian universities:

Translations of documents can be in English or French. If the university and the desired program are French-speaking, a French translation is preferable.

If the translation date of the educational documents is from a few years ago, that’s fine, but a more recent translation is recommended.

At the application stage, a translation of the documents with the translator’s stamp is sufficient, but after admission, you need to submit the original translated documents and transcripts with both the translator’s and judicial stamps, along with copies of all pages in Persian, in an envelope from your institution to the destination university.

If the translation of the degree and transcripts for each educational level is in a single punched file, only one judicial stamp is required, and it’s unnecessary for both the degree translation and the transcript translation to have separate judicial stamps.
