Super Visa for Canada

The Super Visa for Canada is a multiple-entry visa that is valid for up to 10 years, allowing parents and grandparents of Canadian citizens and permanent residents to stay in Canada for up to 5 years each time they enter the country, without needing to renew their status, so they can live alongside their children and grandchildren.

This visa is also known as the Family Visa, Parent Visa, or Canadian Parent Visa, and it differs from the Canadian Sponsorship Visa and the Canadian Tourist Visa.

If you are looking to apply for the Canadian Super Visa but are not fully aware of its conditions and regulations, we recommend that you read this article.

New Super Visa Regulations

On June 7, 2022, the Minister of Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada announced some positive changes to the Super Visa. According to the new government decisions effective from July 4, 2022:

Super Visa holders can stay in Canada for up to 5 years each time they enter the country.

Those who currently hold a Super Visa and are in Canada can apply to extend their stay for more than 2 years from the announced date.

The Minister of Immigration will have the authority to designate international health insurance companies to provide coverage for Super Visa applicants.

Before this new law, Super Visa holders were only allowed to stay in Canada for 2 years each time they entered.

Additionally, in the past, applicants were required to provide health insurance from Canadian insurance companies, but under the new law, insurance from international insurance companies is also permitted, and these companies will be designated by the Minister of Immigration in the near future.

Have an invitation letter from your child or grandchild.

Be physically healthy and undergo medical tests approved by Canada.

Have no barriers to entering Canada.

Proof of financial capacity for the super visa in Canada 2024.

Your child or grandchild must provide a minimum income to apply for your visa, known as LICO (Low Income Cut-off). LICO represents the minimum income level equivalent to the poverty line in urban areas of Canada. If your child or grandchild’s income is below the amount specified in the LICO table, your visa application will be rejected.

The LICO amount depends on the number of family members and is announced by the Canadian government each year.

Counting family members in calculating LICO

To determine the minimum income for the inviter based on the LICO table, you need to consider all family members, which includes:

The host or inviter (child/grandchild)

The spouse or partner of the child/grandchild

Dependent children of the child/grandchild

Anyone your child/grandchild has previously sponsored and their agreement is still in effect.

You as the parent or grandparent of your child or grandchild

Your spouse or partner (in case of remarriage)

For example: Amir is married and lives in Canada with his wife and one child. He is inviting his parents to his home under Canada’s Super Visa. He needs to consider the minimum income for 5 people according to the LICO table, which means for himself, his wife, and his child, plus his parents.

Note: Dependent children of parents or grandparents do not qualify for the Super Visa and must apply for a visitor visa. Under the visitor visa, they can stay in Canada for a maximum of 6 months each time they enter.

Now that you understand how many people to consider when calculating the LICO amount, we will provide the required income for the inviter (child or grandchild) according to the LICO table based on the number of family members in 2024.

The super visa for Canada or long-term family visit visa is a multi-year visa valid for up to 10 years that allows eligible parents and grandparents to stay in Canada for up to 2 years on their first trip without needing to leave. However, on subsequent trips, they can’t stay for more than 6 consecutive months. This visa is different from a Canadian tourist visa.
